Living Off Grid On A Remote Resettled Island
Back to the Island invites you to experience the spirit of Newfoundland’s outport life — from the wharf to the woods, and the kitchen to the garden. Join us as we share stories, photos, and memories from our days on Woody Island.
Our mission is to celebrate simple, sustainable living on Woody Island — rooted in the land, the sea, and the traditions that shaped Newfoundland’s outport communities. Through stories, crafts, and honest work, Back to the Island hopes to inspire others to live closer to nature and carry forward the spirit of island life.
Traditional Newfoundland Style
Baked fresh the old-fashioned way, our homemade bread carries the taste of outport Newfoundland tradition. Each loaf is kneaded by hand, risen slow, and baked golden brown — soft on the inside, with a crust that tells of woodstove warmth and kitchen memories passed down through generations. Simple ingredients, real flavour, and made with heart — just like Nan used to make.

This is a movement of billions. Whether you’re most comfortable contributing time to help achieve our advocacy goals, money to help us grow, or energy to put political pressure on our governments to change, we need you on our team.
Gardening the right way!
On Woody Island, we keep close to the land — planting, tending, and harvesting our own vegetables and fruit, just as generations before us did. It’s honest work, and the taste tells the story.
The waves roll gently onto the beach, breaking softly against the shore — a steady rhythm that feels like the island’s own heartbeat.
Our home. Our way of living. One turn of the soil at a time.
On Woody Island, life moves at the pace of the tides. Our home, our way of living — shaped by the wind, the sea, and one turn of the soil.
